2005 Kia Rio gears grinding (5 speed manual) Sign In

I have a 2005 Kia Rio, 5 speed manual where the gears grind when shifting into 1st or 2nd gear while the car is moving. There are no problems when shifting into 3rd thru 5th or reverse. If I strart out in first, the gears will momentarily grind when shifting into second before going into gear, however if I go from first to third, it will shift smoothly. If I start out in second gear, it will also shift smoothly into third. I'm trying to figure out if this is going to be expensive, if I could do it myself, or if I just keep shifting from first to third (or start in second, although that's not very good for the clutch). Any help is appreciated.

Do you have any problem getting it into 1st or reverse from a dead stop?

No. Just when the car is moving.

That's a sign or worn out synchronizers in the transmission. That's major. A used transmission might be the best way to go.

Already been pricing them because I'm never lucky enough to get off cheap. So far the price range for used is b/t $400 and $600.

Thanks for the help.

Find one with the lowest mileage and no signs of external leaks.
