Re: 2002 chevy silverado 1500 not workink in D or 3 gear Sign In

There could be a number of problems . First off 96 and newer GM truck transmissions ( i could be wrong on the year) use the 4L60E or the more heavier duty 4L80E tranny where the PCM controls the shifting, whereas in the past the transmission did the shifting ( no ECM/PCM control). There is a harness that runs from the PCM to the transmission that controls the shift actuators ( ie 1st actuator, D actuator, Reverse actuator, etc). These actuators in turn activate the chosen gear as per demand either by selecting a gear thru the shift knob or by selecting D and letting the PCM choose which gear for you. Now here are the possible problems:-

1. Harness at the transmission is loose (PCM is sending the signal but there is no connection to the actuator). Check and make sure the harness connector to the tranny is secured in place.

2. There is a short circuit in the harness. ( 3rd and D signal wires are either shorted to ground or held high to battery voltage or shorted to other sigal wires). Disconnect harness at tranny and check if any pins are grounded using a mutimeter, also check harness itself for damage.

3. Transmission shift cable is out of adjustment.

4. Trasmission fluid passages are blocked. (Actuators are working but the fluid passages for the actuators are blocked or there are air bubbles in the passages)

5. Actuators are kaput. ( Signal from the PCM is getting thru but actuators are not responding).

Hope the info that I provided helps.
