2002 Town and Country transmission compatibility questions... Sign In

Hi, I have a 2002 Town and Country Limited with a 3.8L engine (137k miles). The transmission appears to have gone out. When I place it in gear and rev the engine... it limits the revving to 2-3 rpms without going anywhere but it does engage. Weird!!

Anyway, I have a 2000 Town and Country LXi also with a 3.8L engine with a lotta of miles on it (220k). Engine's acting up. Needs new freeze plugs, heater core, PCM, etc. Figured I'd take the transmission then junk it. I was wondering if I could take the transmission from that and put it on the 2002. The engine configuration looks to be different at first glance from under the hood.

I'm not going to buy a new transmission. I can't afford it. I'm not scared to wrench up on a car and have always repaired my own cars with the use of a repair manual. Could a possible rebuild of the 2002 be best than heading to my local junkyard for a used one? Would a repair manual mechanic be able to tackle a complex job as a rebuild?

If a junkyard is my best bet then how can I confirm what other years and models also work with the 2002.

Thanks for any advice.

One thing... the 2000 is a front wheel drive. I am not sure about the 2002. It was a gift and we received it broken so we have never driven it. How can I confirm which FWD or AWD?

Well transmission expert should re-build it that way it's guaranteed.. Your cheapest option is used one...

To tell if it's AWD or FWD is look at back axle for differential, driveshaft.. You can also phone your chrysler dealership with your VIN number and they can tell you.

Sure I understand that.

Both the 2000 and 2002 that I listed are front wheel drives. How can I find out if they are interchangeable?

3.8L FWD 2001-2002
3.3L FWD 2001-2002
3.8L AWD 2001-2002

According to my resources.
