Sign In 2002 Mercury SABLE 3.0L. 162K mi. AX4N Transmission. After having ring gear replaced, no 3rd gear or OD. With selecter in 'OD' it just revs and slips when it tries to shift out of 2nd. With selecter in 'D' it will not shift past 2nd but does not slip. Fluid level OK. Yellow 'gear' warning light on dash flashes. Sign In What were the symptoms before the ring gear replacement? Can you give us some history before the repair? Did a shop perform this repair? The gear light is flashing because the PCM has determined there is a problem with the transmission and has set a code(s). You'll need a high end scan tool to find out what code(s) is being stored. Sign In The ring gear was replaced by a self-employed general mechanic. [not a tranny guy] The symptom was the starter motor did not engage with the stripped section of the ring gear on the torque converter. There were no other issues at that time; transmission worked ok. A friend suggested that after reinstalling a transmission sometime cable adjustments need to be done. If you think this is worth checking' where would iI find the procedures? Thanks for your help. Sign In You really need to have the PCM scanned to see what transmission trouble code(s) is being stored. That may give you direction. You could also inspect the electrical connections on the transmission to be sure everything is plugged in and wiring is misrouted or damaged. Sign In I had a 2001 sable and it had the same problem, took it to the dealer. They replaced the tranny twice they said it would keep doing it beguz they (mercury) didn't have a better (improved) tranny too replace the one that was in it. Mine was under warranty though.
