2002 Isuzu Trooper, 3.5L Engine, 151,000 Miles

Now, I am going to start out that I have seen a transmission specialist but, being that I have noticed some things out of place of what he said (Transmission totally done, completely burnt up) I wanted to ask other people.

About 5 months ago, I was driving over a bridge and my Isuzu Trooper jumped to 6,000 RPMS and then would not shift into 3rd gear. After driving for awhile, trying to get to a place to stop, it stopped moving completely. We ended up towing it back to my house.

The car now only moves in 4WD, and when switched into 2WD, will literally slip out of first gear, meaning after moving about a foot the car will jolt, stop moving, and then get back into first gear. This is an Automatic transmission, by the way.

So, people have told me one of two things:

1) Transmission completely burnt

I say this isn't true because if it was truly "done" and "burnt out" I don't believe it would move, more or less shift as it does shift in 4WD, but it still isn't driveable. It jumps and has an issue starting to move.

2) The solenoids have gone bad

I thought this may be a decent explanation. The car can shift, just barely. But, it does slip out of gear completely, making me believe it may be something more serious than just two 65$ solenoids.

I would really enjoy some more input. If needed, I can answer any questions to the best of my humble ability that you have after this explanation. Thank you in advance.

Oh, and the code(s) ran on the car is P0141, for the O2 sensors.

It operates in 4wd but not 2wd- something is NOT right with that statement..
maybe clarify the operation in 2wd as opposed to 4wd...

did you check fluid - level color ?
I suspect the code reader you used is NOT a professional unit- tell us about the reader?

will it do all modules?
will it do manufacturers specific- P0999 and up?

No, I spoke right. Once it switches into 2WD, it will not shift into first gear. It will not move whatsoever, even when I put it manually into Low, 2nd, or 3rd gear. Once in 4WD, it moves. Don't ask me why, it's odd to me as well.

The transmission fluid is between Min and Max, as it should, and is red in color.

The code reader does go up to P0999 and up, unsure if it's a professional module, more than likely not. When I cleared the code P0141, the Check Engine light went off for about three starts of the car.

Hello,
This trans is a 4L30E, should have 2 pans. The first time when you lost 3rd is the direct clutch, weak point on this trans. Then you said it stopped moving, more than likely the filter got clogged killed the line pressure burnt out the band. This transmission takes off on a band. As far as the 2wd,4wd deal, it will move in 4 wheel drive because the transfercase is locking the front diff. Alot of times in my shop when the cars dont move we do that too. This trans does not have a dipstick the fill should be in the rear pan, i would sample the fluid, if its dark and smells burt, the trans is done. Gary
