2002 Intrepid won't shift

Hi,
I just bought a 2002 dodge intrepid with a 2.7L engine tonight with 118K miles on it. It was working fine yesterday during a test drive and today half way home. I took it on the highway and it sounded funny. I noticed that the engine light came on and then the rpm was sitting around 5-6. I was doing 60 on the highway and it wouldn't shift. I got off the highway and was doing 40 and the rpm was on 4. I got home and it smelled hot under the hood. I checked the level of the tranny fluid and it was normal. Could this just be the modulator or a valve problem that is an easy fix or should I take it back to try to get my money back? When I come to a stop, it idles at almost 2 rpm's.

Also, I just did the key thing to get a code and it reads P0700. (if that helps any)

I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid that would not shift out of limp mode or 2nd gear after a stop when warmed up. Replaced the shift sensor inside of the tranny (Dealer Part 375.00) and everything is back to normal. This is a common problem on this vehicle and Dodge should be forced to recall the vehicles and replace a dangerous part that fails on most of these cars.
