Trans is making a flickering noise ( like the sound of a baseball card in your bike spokes. Yes, I know I'm dating myself here, but its the only way I can think of describing the sound) It's only noticeable when starting out at slow speeds up to about 15-20mph. I don't really know how long this has been going on, as with the cold weather over the winter the windows are up, noise from ladder rack, etc. I just noticed it about 2 weeks ago. Trans fluid and filter was changer in september 2008. Truck has auto trans,manual shift on floor for 4wd and manual locking hubs. 145,000 miles. I had my son-in-law (Certified mechanic) look at it and he determined the sound was coming from rear end of trans and not a u-joint, transfer case, or front wheels. His shop doesn't do internal trans work, so I took the truck to an Aamco shop to get their opinion. The fella told me 1200.00 to Remove trans, inspect for damage, install "soft parts kit" (whatever that is) and upon inspection give me a price on any "hard parts" that may be needed. He said hard parts were gears, etc. He then said fluid was contaminated with metal shavings, so I would probably need a new torque converter for 290.00 more. I'm trying to figure out how he knows the fluid is contaminated with shavings as they never dropped the trans pan. Also, when I changed the fluid and filter in Sept 08, there was almost nothing but a very little fine "sludge" attached to the pan magnet. Could anybody give me some insight/direction as to this problem. I'm not a mechanic, and I think it would be impossible to diagnose internal damage without actually looking inside. It sounds reasonable to give a price for teardown, with final price based on visual inspection and additional parts needed. However, the torque converter issue puzzles me. He says with shavings in trans fluid, there will be shavings in torque converter. Barring any real damage to the converter, can't the converter be flushed out and re-installed?

jencarrie; I've never heard of anyone going to Aamco and not needing a transmission overhaul. (my personal observation...not one of CarJunky). I'd recommend getting a second opinion. Check with friends, enemies, relatives, BBB, ect. for an independent (or dealer) that has a good reputation. And, yes, the torque convertor can be 'flushed'. It will require a full-system flush, but can be done. Snap-On (Motor-Vac) has such a machine and can be done at most shops.
