2001 blazer s10 4WD noise problem

2001 chevy blazer s10 4.3 making noise like something rubbing on tire. Was driving about 55 mph and heard loud thud from passenger front. sounded like I hit something or maybe a blow out. Noticed front tire noise as I started to slow down. Front end felt sloppy like I was getting a flat. No flat tire also noticed 4WD high was on. Pushed 2WD, light stayed on but really bad noise still in front. Had to drive about ten more miles to get home. Stopped a couple of times to check front end parts and tires. smelled like rubber was burning also noticed front driver bearing was hotter than passenger side. This morning when I went to diagnose problem all noises gone. Haven't tried 4WD yet 25 miles in the middle of nowhere, didn't want to risk it. Why would it change to 4WD by itself and was that noise a transfer case problem or what. I changed front driver wheel bearing about a month ago, and everything was fine. aslo noticed 4WD was on ocasionally when I was driving, last summer. Thanks for any help.
