Hi- on a 2001 Mazda 626 V6, 2.5l Automatic Tranmission:
Is it normal for the 2001 626, v6 auto to have a delayed shift from 2nd to 3rd, when the engine is cold? Car does this for first 2 minutes of operation when cold, then shifts fine after warm up. Fluid is full, no burnt smell- nice and pink. Is there anything the home mechanic can do to fix?
The car has 65,000 miles on it. Transmission Flush and Fill (did not replace filter) was done by dealer at 35,000 and 60,000 miles.

When we flush the trans. fluid the filter should always be replaced. A lot of shops now have a machine to flush the trans. and clean grime out of the oil passages and valves. Most of the time it improves shift quality.

Thanks Steve- I asked the Mazda dealer why they did not change the filter, and they said the filter is a screen and actually gets cleaned as well during the fluid exchange. Is that accurate?

Yes, pretty much. If you system is bad enough to plug up that screen, then nothing is going to save it.

Thanks for your replies to my questions on this topic. The delayed shift is from 2nd to thrid gear when cold. My mechanic feels pretty convinced that it is a stuck valve or solenoid in the valve body. The transmission is the GF4ael 4 speed. He recomended a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix to free up the valve, but I was never one for snake oil remodies. Do you have any feedback on this? Thanks

Lucas is pretty good stuff but still not a cure all used alone. If you haven't done so already, I would do the complete flush but look for someone that has the chemicals that are supposed to be used before the flush. Motorvac or BG make good products for that. That loosens things up and takes a lot of the dirt out with the old fluid. The new fluid has detergent in it that will continue to work after. You can add the Lucas after that if you want.

Hi - Thanks for the earlier repsonses. A mechanic friend of mine feels I have a bad 2-3 upshift solenoid. I can access the valve body cover by removing the battery.
With that being said, is it difficult to pull the valve body and replace the solenoid, or am I asking for a world of hurt?
