2001 Forester AT fluid light. Not really transmission?

2001 Forester AT fluid light. Not really transmission? Sign In

I have a 2001 Subaru Forester (140k) with a few problems. I'm wondering if they're related.

1) AT Fluid light comes on once every few months
2) Road noise at 45-50mph, like the roar of a bad wheel bearing
3) Steering wheel shakes when taking off. Handling feels off.

All these issues started after a brake job I did. My first thought was that I damaged a wheel bearing while pounding the rotors to get them off.
The shop I originally took it to said it may be the transmission/differential, instead. That would explain the AT Fluid light, but I also read that a bad CV joint or bearing could trigger that light.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you mean AT oil temp light?

More than likely the transmission fluid is getting over 300 degrees F. Usually the reason for that is either you have an apply component slipping or a problem with the transmission cooler. Are there any transmission related trouble codes being stored? You should take it to a transmission shop for diagnosis.

The second shop I went to was a Subaru dealer. The tech thought it was the front left wheel bearing. When I asked about transmission codes, they brushed it off like they hadn't even run the diagnosis. (That's the whole reason I took it there!) He just said he didn't feel anything funny with the transmission when he drove it. He didn't say anything about why the light might be turning on.

I'm really skeptical about these guys.

Most of the time wheel bearing noise changes with load. That means if your driving and you swerve causing a change in weight on the bearings, bearing noise will change or lessen on the bearing with less weight on it.

Usually bearings don't cause vibrations on acceleration. CV axles can cause drive-line vibrations.

If a bearing is really noisy, you might be able to tell by spinning the suspected wheel with it off the ground. Sometimes a bad wheel bearing will also cause the wheel to have play.

The ATF temp light coming on should be diagnosed. When the ECU turns on the light it will cause the transmission to shift shock or have a harsh shift in hopes of getting the temperature to come down. Don't quite understand why a CV axle would cause the ATF temp light to come on.

I just picked up the car from Subaru after getting the wheel bearing replaced. None of the symptoms are gone, but the car feels like it drives better. I guess the wheel bearing was "an" issue, but definitely not "the" issue. I just wish I could get an honest diagnosis. If a Subaru dealer can't figure it out, I don't know where to turn.

I'll update this if I ever solve the mystery.
