2001 Dodge,Not Sure Transmission Problem or Not? Sign In

I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan, engine size 3.1 has 83,000 miles on it, a few days ago we turned on air conditioner for first time this year, the engine light came on and the steering was making a funny noise, also crack and pops in the front steering wheels. The van shifted down into second gear, looked up in manual, and said could be transaxle trouble, the car might reset it self. Took to a transmission specialist, said his diagnostic test found nothing. Could be a computer problem take it to a dealer the computer brain might of shut off and trying to reset. Took to another mechanic and he says his diagnostic saying it's an internal transmission problem and I need new sway bars and gaskets. Not sure who to believe? Please help!!! Diagnostic test shows the codes p0700 & also p0605 not sure if computer memory codes?

Thank you so much!!

Did the problem go away when you shut the A/C off?

Are you still having the problem?

Have in shop today to fix sway bar, but not sure if that will fix the problem, left air off for a few days, light goes off one day and then pops on the next, still makes light popping noise in right front driver tires, that's why I'm getting the sway bars fixed thinking that might be part of the problem, but not sure if that could cause the engine light to come on and off like that?

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

There is no such thing as a computer chip in your vehicle. It's downloadable and programable. The PO700 is a generic transmission code that doesn't tell you much except there is a problem in the trans. A transmission shop can get more specific codes from the trans control module that PepBoys cannot.

What does the P0605 mean, if you can help? Or does it mean about the same thing?

That's also a transmission code.

Re: Not Sure Transmission Problem or Not? Sign In

Talk to a transmission guy this afternoon, said the P0605 code would have to be fixed first and it could be a control module wire under my drivers side wheel, but I would still have to have a dealer reflash my computer? Does this sound right?

It sounds feasible. I would just check some references on the guy but he sounds reasonable.

Re: Not Sure Transmission Problem or Not? Sign In

Pardon my jumping in here;
P0605 is the trouble code for the TCM (transmission control module). As Hammer suggested, have the codes cleared.
Once the codes are cleared, turn the ignition from off to on, start the engine. With the brakes applied, move the shifter through all gears. If either P0605 or P0700 reset, the procedure says to replace the TCM. And, yes, it will have to be reprogrammed. Sorry.

Re: Not Sure Transmission Problem or Not? Sign In

Is the trans stuck in second gear all the time even when you shut the van off and restart it? Does it try to shift or does it just stay in second all the time. It,s rare that the trans TCM (computer ) would fail. Usually it is a speed sensor on the front of the trans. Does it ever shift? The code needs to be read at the tcm to find the exact fault description. Gear ratio error would indicate speed sensor. Find that out before you start buying and reprograming computers!!! Sometimes techs replace expensive parts , then find it's a 50.00 part after the fact. They replace the cheap problem part and tell you the new computer did the job??
