Problem started a few days ago with a slight slippage from 1st to 2nd gear (very intermittently) and has progressed to excessive lose of all gears.

Yesterday I was driving home on the interstate at about 70 mph, and all seemed fine until I took my exit and came up to traffic light to stop and noticed the engine was racing and when I pressed on thr gas pedal to go , it didn't want to move very fast and would not shift from low gear, so I pulled over to turn into a plaza, it would not move at all in any gear including reverse. I sat trying many times moving shifter to all gears without a change, but after about 5 minutes it finally started to move in only 1st gear. I parked it and happened to notice my temperature gauge was rising to the "HOT" position, so I turned off the engine and raised the hood to look around and didn't notice any steam or signs of an overheat problem. I inspected hoses and decided to try starting the engine again to see if the cooling fans were running and whille I sat looking at the temp. gauge, I rev'd the engine and saw the needle going back to the normal position. I then tried puting car in reverse and nothing;I let it coast backward a little and tried forward with success. I decided to try driving in parking lot to see what would happen and it even shifted to 2nd, so I tried to make it home (about 2 miles up the road) and it started slipping again and would not shift out of 1st gear. I slowly (20-25mph) drove it home and pulled in my driveway and checked the fluid (with engine running - in park) and I'm not positive, but I think it is showing way-over filled acording to the dipstick instructions and fill markings. The fluid is red and doesn't look or smell burnt.

I let it sit overnight and just tried it a little while ago, and it went right into reverse without hesitation and then went into 1st gear just fine and moved forward without hesitation. As I proceeded forward it shifted into 2nd OK, so I pulled around my neighborhood block (at 20-25mph) and when I came to my driveway I decided to back in and no reverse. I put it back into forward and had no forward gears; it wouldn't move at all. I turned off the engine and started it back up after about 20-30 seconds and it moved forward. As I was driving it back around to my drive way again it stopped moving in forward gear, so I turned car off again and in about 15-20 seconds started it up and was able to get it move forward. This time I heard a mild whirring / whining noise that would get a little louder and a little higher pitched as speed increased and dropped off as speed decreased. I parked it in the driveway and came in to my computer to see if I might get some input as to what I may be looking at.

I have not had this car for long, since the end of Aug. 2011. I found paperwork from previous owner showing the transmission had been rebuilt a year and a half ago, with less than 20 thousand miles since it was done. The check engine light has been on ever since I got the car. The car currently has 117,500 miles on it. I bought it from a guy who buys, fixes up and resells cars; won't do that again, but it is what it is now. My biggest problem is I've been unemployed since the 1st of Aug. 2011 and I don't have money or available credit for any big repairs. Does anyone have any possible idea, from all the described sysmptoms, what could possibly be wrong? Hopefully something minor in cost to repair.

Thanks,
Desperate

Did this paperwork show any warranty on it? It sounds like this trans isn't any good and you would want to have it looked at by a trans guy to confirm what is at fault. But you may not be under warranty anymore and would end up eating the cost yourself if this is the case. These things never seem to happen when you have extra cash laying around.
