2000 GMC Jimmy 4 wheel drive problems

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy 4.3 auto 4 wheel drive with about 165,000 miles. When I push the 4 wheel high button on the dash, it actually shifts into 4 wheel low. I can't go any faster than 30 mph, and it winds out really high. There is even a slight shake in the steering. The light is still illuminated on the 4 wheel high button. I want to know what I need to fix it, so I don't end up paying for a part I don't need. PLEASE HELP!!! Winters coming and I need my 4 wheel drive.
