1985 Olds 442, just rebuilt trans, added shift kit, new converter, .500 boost valve. Has a TCI lockup kit on it. Seems to shift fine other than won't go into high. Something stuck in valve body maybe? Possibly bad solenoid? Anyone have any advice

I always double check - Are you sure it will not shift to 4 OR is there a TCC lockup issue? Pull codes - yes I know limited data BUT an easy place to start....

Arrg - where's Gary our site trans guru? Anywho - I don't think this is a 4 spd at all rather just locks up in 3rd - right? It isn't supposed to with low vacuum detected or by cable I think position of throttle? Can't know now unless the trick kit itself just might prevent lock up. Try this > Look for a vacuum line at side of trans if any at all. If there it does have to read actual manifold vacuum if lower will not lock up into high and really shouldn't be shifting well at all, T PS: If you can pull codes as Kev suggested for this and know how do so. It will just be blinks counting but post the # that represents and I still have the paper book which says what it's thinking/seeing for year 1985........... Should start with 12 twice and end with 12 twice ----- I think then repeat - I think without looking at it right now..........

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. I can't pull codes, previous owner replaced engine and it is not using the original wiring, computer. I don't have a gauge but it seems to be getting plenty of vacuum, goes to the intake

OK - Altered so it still uses vacuum. You really need to know the Hg# on that. No argument trans technical is NOT my specialty. However if vacuum to that module stays wrong vs "actual intake manifold vacuum" it will mess up shifting. You know but manifold actual vacuum is the indicator for a load on the engine in which case a locking converter wouldn't lock if reading lower than is real so need to know the #s are correct and both see the same. Basics: Some of the vacuum modules you can adjust just as those with cables also some adjust for kick down or shift up time based on mechanical throttle position. If no TPS to electronically tell this where throttle is IDK where it would default to? Since this is altered it's going to take some serious understanding if you want to "inform" this trans now to lock up as I'm pretty sure it's not a 4th actual gear just feels like it locked vs not locked. Speed will unlock it as well so that's another consideration. What was OE to tell that it was going fast enough to lock and at what speed allowed or below that NEVER lock please kind of thing. Scratching head with ideas that may not pan out but need to be known. If this has cruise control does it work? If not it doesn't know how fast it's going at trans I think? Plenty here that is going to be a hair puller to make work with altered controls - can be done, I don't do it nor know how much it might take - sorry. I understand 1985 seems old but isn't old enough yet to really just go at things and adjust away as you wish for what happens and when. Awaiting what Gary, user name "gsferraro" or other regulars too say what next for an approach as altered I can't guess more, T

Hello, Sorry guys i dont have 2 seconds to myself, shop is packed. Question how are the other shifts hard but on time? have you tried to adjust the cable? When you say wont go into high, do you mean overdrive? As you move the cable adjustment do the shift points change? This is an overdrive trans with a lock-up solenoid. Gary

Yes, I have tried adjusting to cable 5 or 6 times, doesn't seem to change any. Does not shift hard. Will not shift into overdrive, even manually. Cruise not hooked up. Previous owner said it worked good for couple yrs after he put the TCI lockup kit on it, all clutches were toast when I rebuilt it, only had 2nd gear when I bought it

Just FYI - they make a pistol type hand vacuum pump with gauge that both reads vacuum and creates it to make an item work. Should come with stuff to "T" into a line and watch live vacuum change - load, RPM etc. Check those out as both gauge and a source for vacuum you can make an item at least move or see results. Should only cost about $30 bucks or so and handy to own thing, Tom

X2 Your sure its 4th OD not engaging... thoughts 1)Why I ask AGAIN is there is a common component for TCC and cruise control... 2)A lack of TCC could/would cause a 4th clutch pack band failure.. 3)TV cable too loose I am bowing out and letting gary advise.

I do also want to bow out when Gary has more time. 20Hg - OK seems highish to me. While you have the gauge test other end of hose to vacuum modulator for the same just because. Other to rule out while you have the gauge or own it is check with no load on engine at 2,000 RPM just because you are there. It should read the same as at idle or exhaust restrictions should be looked for. That would sure make a trans read under load and could easily prevent/delay lock-up if all else what perfect. Leaving this alone now unless some wild idea might help? Tom

Hello, I see a vacuum gauge is mentioned, this trans does not use vacuum, Im trying to see if there is throttle pressure, so my question is, if you take off hard at a stop(give it some gas)does it shift late or are the shift points always the same? Gary

Just tried that Gary, the shift points do change. Taking off normal it shifts to 3rd at 12mph, taking off hard it shifts to 3rd at 25mph. There is a vacuum line from carb to electrical part of the TCI lockup kit

Hello, 3rd at 12 mph is way to early, what was the problem the trans had to be rebuilt, during the rebuild did you make sure the throttle valve is free(you do this by pushing on the plunger and watch the valve move) was it doing this before?

Trans only had 1 forward gear when I bought car, all clutches were toast. No, unfortunately, I did not check that. Looks like I will be pulling pan to check some things

Hello, What you actually want to see if the valve that the plunger pushes in the valvebody, you want to make sure that valve is free. Gary

So that means I have to take valve body off? If I can push plunger all way in then the valve should be free, shouldn't it?

Hello, Your pushing the plunger against a spring, if the valve is stuck, you will still be able to push theplunger in. The set up is, plunger&sleeve-Throttle spring-throttle valve. Gary
