1999 mercury cougar transmission slipping.

1999 mercury cougar v6 front wheel drive with around 135 thousand miles. the transmission has started slipping really bad. everything else is fine until you shift into drive and the gears have problems changing. we changed the transmission fluid because it was almost empty but this still didn't help. could something else be wrong?

Trans wouldn't normally consume fluid so it leaked somewhere. While low enough to slip it doesn't take much to burn it out IMO and probably needs an overhaul and the leak fixed too if not part of the overhaul itself as it could be a cooling line,
