I bought my daughter a 1999 mazda protege with 60k miles on it. While driving today it stalled, i immediately moved it to neutral, quick grind noise, dash lights came on and it coasted to a stop. Car batt was dead, interior lights would work, so charged the batt w/another car for several mins and car eventually started. I could see and hear the car shift into gear, but wouldnt move. Tires roll backward and forward. I would move the gear shift, see it move in engine compartment, hear a buzz but would not engage tranny and stayed in neutral. I towed car and will now stay in park and keep wheels locked in park, but still no transmission engaged-it stays in neutral. car starts fine, runs fine, and will idel. fluid is good, light red, no burnt smell. eng light on reference the max airflow module not being replaced yet(recall). any thoughts?
