Hello my name is Dustin and I own a 1999 Dodge Dakota SLT with a 5.2l V8. Ive owned the truck for a little over a year and it recently started to make a light grinding noise that you can hear coming up through the 4x4 shifter on the floor. The sound continues even if the truck is in neutral and the sound hardly intensifies if the truck is sped up. It seems to shift the same as always but it grinds all the time, just wondering if anyone has an idea of where to start with the diagnosis?

So far I'll blame that on a bearing and you should have a transmission shop listen to it for best diagnosis,

Ok.. I took it to a mechanic to listen to it and take a look at it, first thing he looked at was to see if there was any metal flakes in the transmission oil pan and yes he found some. Does that automatically mean the transmission is bad?

Yes, no and maybe. There's usually some flakes and many put a magnet inside to catch them. You said it could do this in neutral so my first thoughts are possible torque converter, a front bearing or hard to say but we know that isn't normal and by the symptoms may have to come out and IMO pretty pointless not to just have it done if the vehicle is fine otherwise.

Grinding and now felt in 4X4 shifter doesn't sound too good. Slight chance that some mount is allowing metal to metal on like exhaust parts fooling the diagnosis but that should be clearly related to engine RPMs or load on this truck,
