1998 Honda Accord EX will not shift into second gear when transmission is cold.

I have a 1998 Honda Accord with 160,000 miles. When the weather is cold it will shift into first gear normally, when it shifts into second gear it keeps spinning and will not move the car foward. After the engine warms up the transmission seems to work normal with the exception that when you come to a stop the transmission shifts hard into first gear. I have no transmission experience and would appreciate any information I can get on the problem.

When a transmission gets up in age and mileage the seals start getting hard on some of the apply components. When the transmission fluid is cold the hard seals may allow fluid pressure to leak out causing a a servo piston to not apply a band or clutch pack piston to not compress a set of clutches for a particular gear. Once the transmission fluid heats up, the seals soften and the problem may go away or not be as bad.

Your best bet is to swing into a tranny shop and have them do a pressure test on the circuits for second gear to see if there is a pressure problem. If there is a problem, the transmission will require breakdown and replacement of worn components.

Did you ever figure out/fix the problem? My 98 Accord with about 160,000 miles is starting to do the exact same thing.
