Hello. I'm new to the forum, so please be patient... I have a 1997 Ford Escort wagon that has been sitting for about a year at my mother-in-law's house. There was no indication of a transmission problem in the past. The problem that currently exists is that the transmission is stuck in "Park". Three separate people advised me that this is common for automatic transmissions that sit for a while. All three advised me to jack the front wheels off the ground (to relieve any torque) and then to try and shift out of "Park." I tried this, with no success. Before I tow the vehicle to a transmission repair shop, I thought I'd try to find another solution - any thoughts?

See if the brake lights work. There's a system to disallow shifting from park if brakes aren't applied and most Ford's use the brake light as the sensor. Switch should be on/at braked pedal arm up near pivot, T
