1997 Ford Contour SE - V6 2.5L Engine - 135,000 miles

I was stopped at a stop sign and when I moved it it was sluggish and not getting power. I could feel it shifting into second but when I press the gas pedal I couldn't go faster then 10mph and the rpms for engine wasn't increasing. The O/D light would come on/off regardless on if I pressed the O/D button. I stopped the car and restarted it but still had same problem. I was about 5 miles from home so decided I would drive it slowly home. When I tried to turn around in a driveway it wouldn't move when in reverse. Tried putting it in Neutral and push it out of driveway but wouldn't move. It would still pul forward in drive though.

When we checked the transaxale fluid it was full but my husband noticed that air was leaking from one of the hoses above the transaxle fluid dip stick. Turns out the hose was cut and someone had taped it together. The tape had become brittle and was leaking air. I used some duct tape to reseal the leak. At the same time, I accidentally disconnected the other end of the hose. I plugged it back in but had pulled a side hose loose and it was leaking air. My husband was able to move the car in reverse. It backed up some (5 feet) and then wouldn't go back anymore but it was enough we could pull it forward and get out of driveway.

On way home, he was able to go up to about 45 but there were times it acted like it was going to die. It sat in our driveway for about a week until we had a day nice enough to look at it again. I put the side hose back on all the way and I don't think it is leaking. The duct tape where the hose was cut is now leaking air. The car will shift through gears but now it won't move at all (drive, reverse, neutral). When I press on the gas pedal the rpms are increasing.

Any ideas... I don't know if issue is with the vacuum hoses or the transmission or both. Haven't had any luck getting anyone to come look at car to see if worth towing to a shop to get repaired.

If the O/D light is flashing, that mean the powertrain controller is probably storing transmission related trouble code(s). You should have the controller scanned and write down the code numbers.

How do I get the controller scanned?

You need to use a scan tool or code reader to retrieve codes from the power train controller. The diagnostic tool plugs into an OBD2 connector under the dash.
