1997 Ford Escort 2.0 automatic 115,000 miles I just purchased this car and I was told by the seller the transmission was bad. I trailered it home and it started up and drove fine for a few miles then stopped moving the car. I stopped and shut the car off, then restarted it and it drove fine again for a few more miles then did it again.

I trust you've checked fluid level on level ground when warmed up? The fluid is thicker when cold for a while and may thin out such that the pump can't build up pressure enough to move that parts to engage or shift it? You could try changing the fluid but I don't think that's it if it's filled to proper level. There's an outside chance if the filter has a bad fit that it can't pick up fluid?? T
