hi
I have a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis, and its stuck in PARK.It will start, and thats it.I turn the key,and the shifter glides easily through all the gears, but it stays in park.I was backing into a parking space, and the wheel went up against the curb, and thats when this problem happened.

I went under the car,and located the white plastic piece connected to the black rubber ,and was able to move it from gear to gear that way,but I do not want to keep going under the car.Where is the bracket located that might be loose? How can I fix this,or shift it from inside the car,and not goin under it? Steve

That is a cable that connects the shifter at the steering column to the shifting lever at the tranmission. The cable is either disconnected at one end or the other or it is broken internally.

I just called the auto parts store, and he said it was a broken cable tube located in the car at the bottom of the steering column, and car parts stores do not stock.I don't go to dealers ,so its off to the local junk yard.

I know its hard to help someone out with a car problem,or any repair without seeing the vehicle, but after I explain to him that I can shift it near the transmission underneath the car,and the cable tube was still connected to the column,he said it sounded like the tube was bad,so I got the part this morning up the junk yard,so I will let you know if it takes care of everything after I replaced it.
