1994 Chrysler Concorde Reverse Problems. Sign In

 1994
Chrysler
Concorde
3.5L
178,000 miles.

Well my reverse went out about a year ago with no signs. It just up and quit. And it was right after we changed the transmission fluid and filter. Now every other gears works perfectly with no problems or noises. Just reverse will not work. I tried some Lucas transmission cleaner about a week ago to see if it would work but so far no good. I read a repair manual and it had the problem listed and it said i needed to change the fluid and filter to solve the issue but i dont think thats the problem but then again i have no clue. The car runs great other than the reverse problem no noises leaks ect. Any help with this would be amazingly appreciated! Thanks.

It would be just wishful thinking to expect an fluid change to do anything for that problem. The transmission has major internal problems and will have to be removed and rebuilt.

Are you sure? An if you dont mind me asking would it be cheaper to get a transmission at a junkyard or something than rebuild one?

Certainly, it would be cheaper but you'll buy something unknown with no warranty that could have been sitting outside for years. Having it rebuilt will give you basically a new trans with a warranty.

Okay thanks. But this is confusing me totally. I mean the transmission worked perfectly with no problems what so ever until my dad changed the fluid and filter awhile ago. An the day after he changed it the reverse never worked again. Now a week ago when i put the Lucas Transmission Cleaner in it i got it to go in reverse but it just went a lil ways and quit again. Now is there any thing i can do to it to see if its something else before i get a new tranny?

This is not unusual at all. Your transmission was already hurting when he changed the oil but the sludge was actually holding it together by helping seal the seals. The new fluid has detergent in it that washed away all the sludge and left you with nothing but a bad trans. This happens all the time when people change the fluid in a transmission that has burnt, sludged up fluid. The additive merely swelled up the seals temporarily. The transmission is cooked.

That trans has a reverse clutch pack that consist of two disks and one steel plate. If that burns out then you will loose reverse only and all other gears will continue to work just fine. This is fairly uncommon with this unit. Used transmissions tend to be very worn out unless it was rebuilt with newer stronger parts. If you get a used one see if the trans has been painted or tagged as rebuilt. The torque conv may be painted as well. This may increase your chances in getting a good used trans

Well I took the car to Ammco Transmissions and had tests done on everything. The guy told me that nothing showed up on the computers about the trans being bad or anything wrong with it. But he said he needs to do more tests to see if its electrical. He did all this for me for free. Which I am taking the car back this weekend.

Woody; (that was my dad's name...short for Woodrow. kind rare, nowadays) I don't mean to 'look a gift horse in the mouth', but beware. I'd recommend a second opinion after he's done 'checking things'. JMO.

The name of the game in the trans business is to pull the trans out and inspect it for an estimate Say $1,000 . Once we have it taken appart then we will tell you how much we want to charge. Usually the new firm estimate is extremely higher then any price you could have imagined. Sometimes higher than a factory reman with a 60,000 mile warranty honored at dealers all across the country. If you don't like the new staggering estimate then we will put it back together and insatll it in car, for only 1,000 ( your original inspection estimate!). So your out 1,000 bucks. Funny some shops have no idea what the max cost will be even though they have rebuilt 200 of the same transmissions in the last year. What to do?
1. ask to see repairs orders of the last three repairs on the same trans as yours
2. know the cost of a dealer factory reman trans
3. ask the shop if your trans is too expensive to rebuild , if you can bring a trans for them to install?
4. If so how much is the total cost going to be (in writing ) if they install your trans
