1993 dodge caravan sport se trans slipping Sign In

i have 1993 dodge van 4eod trans ,put in drive ,was fine 238000 miles,started hearing clicking /zipping noise when i come to stop,changed fluid,filter. it was fine for 6 mos. it started shuddering in gear at at stop sign, some ttimes shuddering and turning off. Then in drive, it began to act like in neutral till you slightly gave it gas,then shifts into drive and you could go. day by day this week it needs higher rev to go into drive while in drive from stopped. now you have to rev quite high to engage. while driving it whines and when in traffic below 35 it goes into neutral

Those aren't good symptoms IMO for the life of that trans. It takes a "front pump" to produce pressure for the shift a clutching action which are wearing parts. Once really slipping the wear is greatly accelerated. I'm not the web's trans expert but it sure was part of training.

History for the vehicle is transmissions generally wear out requiring overhauls at 75-120K (roughly) intervals in ones I've dealt with.

In my experience changing out/flushing out fluid for new will either help a lot or finish them off,

i have the trans out . can i replace the pump easily since its outside the case or is there something id need to do internally? and thanks for responding so quickly this morning .youre awesome

Again - not my specialty but have a clue. They sell whole rebuild kits which would come with the wearing parts. Bands, clutch packs could have already worn beyond hope. If you just take the pump out and find it all messed up you have a chance. The friction material for bands and clutches is quite thin - like just paper thin so can't take much slipping.

Without doubt take special tools and a real good clean area to totally go thru it. You really can only bench pressure test it for a good clue that it's going to go thru it's tricks and won't know for sure till installed and full of fluid again.

Truth - for decades and many shops just have an arrangement with a trans specialist. The techs that do it all the time and only that know what flaws to look for that could render your own not worth it and get a "core" used to redo.

Good luck if you open the whole thing up. There's a lot of funky stuff in there!

Tom is on the money on this one.....

Since you already have the tranny out, the only 2 real options I see here are to either rebuild (or have rebuilt) the tranny with the kit Tom mentioned (and yes to do this correctly it does takes special tools part stores don't rent or can even get) or take a gamble and get a good used one.

But by no means should you try a small repair and reinstall it.....That is just way too much work for something that probably isn't going to work anyway......

Yes - lot of work for a slim chance. I did used to take easy ones out for a badly dripping front seal and every one still dripped some but stopped the total bloodbath coming out.

The used route: I've been lucky as all get out with used. Mostly because local salvage yards take a real hard look at what they will save and get as much history as they can.

Tough call for the age of it. If overall the vehicle is excellent and you love it go for it. Otherwise cutting losses now might be the best choice which is totally up to you,
