The car in question is a 1992 Pontiac Transport, 3.1 litre engine, forgive me but I cannot even begin to guess at the mileage but the vehicle usually runs like a dream.

Friday we were on our way to a social engagement when someone cut us off in traffic, making us have to stop abruptly. When we got to the next intersection and began to proceed through the light the van jerked as if it was a manual transmission and the clutch had been applied incorrectly.Right after that it stalled. She started up with no problems and we proceeded to the next light. Where she did the same thing, Jerked like a manual transmission when the accelerator was applied, and stalled. We found we could start the engine back up but the minute we put the van in gear, she died. We also noticed that the engine temperature had jumped significantly. She usually never runs hot.

While we awaited the wrecker a gentleman from a nearby auto shop took pity on us, came over and , after hearing our story, told us it could be the torque converter. He then told us he could get us home without the wrecker by popping some type of solenoid but we would have to get to a repair shop asap because, driving with the solenoid disabled, would ultimately fry the transmission. We noticed , as we drove her home, that she would start getting hot when we had to come to a stop, but once we were moving she was fine. I could feel the heat radiating into passenger compartment. Felt like it was coming from the floor. It would dissipate once we began moving.

My questions are these:( forgive me , but I've only 3. and not being a mechanical guru they are probably really simplistic for you)
1: Could our problem have anything to do with having to slam on the brakes just prior to the van acting out? Prior to that , she was running fine.

2: If it is a torque converter (mind you I have a very vague idea what that is) then will this mean we will have to have the transmission rebuilt?

3: Why would the van run hot like I described? Could this be heat from the transmission?

Any input is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

Sounds TCC(torque Converter Clutch) Solinod could be stuck locked or there might be a mechanical issue with the torque converter it's self. Driving the vechical with faulty TCC can also cause damage to the torque converter clutch. I would recommend taking it to a tranny shop it may only be a $400 fix cheaper then a new tranny.
