car started out fine as usual, stopped for a red light and it would not go into 1st or 2nd. i got the car home using 3rd and the rest but now that it sat a day or two the shifter will not come out of 3rd at all.

That sucks dude? I think your looking at a major repair. Sounds like your talking about a manual transmission, right?
My wife owned the same car for 8 years and I never had to work on anything but ball joints and CV joints so i have no direct experience BUT it sounds like the syncros.
While that isn't really any help, I hate it when no one responds at all.
