I have a 1991 Cadillac Deville Sedan with a 4.9L engine and about 88,000 miles on it. My transmission will not take off in first gear when put into drive. It takes off in 3rd. If you manually downshift into first it takes off in 2nd gear. So, I now manually take off in 2nd gear and then shift into drive once it gets going. I have determined that first gear and my passing gear are not working. I can use 2nd, 3rd and overdrive manually which all 3 work perfectly and the car runs very well. I have been told that a new modulator would fix the problem but was then told by a transmission shop that I would have to replace the transmission that a modulator would not help.
Any advice you can give me concerning this problem would be greatly appreciated.
