1990 Fullsize GMC Jimmy Lost 3rd gear Sign In

Hi. I have a 1990 Full size GMC Jimmy 4x4 5.7L V8 with a 700r4 auto trans. I bought this a about a year ago and changed all the fluids and filters in it and when I changed the transmission fluid it was black and smelt horrible, there was also a silver cream on the bottom of the pan. It shifted with no problems I just figured I would change the fluids to get off on a fresh start. About a month ago it would hesitate a little before it would go into 3rd gear but barley enough to really notice. The other day I went for a drive with the family and on the way home on the hwy I noticed the engine was revving higher than it should so I give it some throttle and it revved like it was in neutral so I took it out of OD and put it in D and got my drive back for a while then it slipped out again so I put it back in OD and it worked again for a while, I had to keep doing this all the way home. It would only do it when it would try to find 3rd gear, 1st and 2nd were fine. The next morning I checked the cables and transmission fluid and everything was fine.It sat for a week because I didn't want to mess with it yet due to the time and money I've already put into it. I took it for a drive to show a mechanic buddy of mine what it was doing and he said it was going out but on the bright side it might be a clogged filter or a stuck valve but he was leaning more towards the bad side. What do you think ? And how much would it cost to rebuild one if that is what it needs? Thank You, anything will help.

Appears that the service life of the transmission has ended and it is time for an inspection and overhaul. The 3-4 clutch is probably fried which often happens when they get up in the high mileage territory. The black fluid is an indicator of that.

The silver paste is probably from the planetary gear sets as they wear, which is normal. Sometimes there will be a magnet in the pan to attract the worn gear particles.

Call around some shops in your area that do transmission overhauls and see what they charge. You also have the option of purchasing a reman transmission from a reliable source.

One important thing on those is that the TV cable has to be functional and adjusted correctly. If the cable isn't adjusted correctly or broken, it will cook a transmission pretty quick.

By the sounds of you have a clutch pack in the transmission that may be done. Check fluid condition for burnt, blackish and or metallic substance in the fluid. By what you told me of the condition of the fluid when you took the pan down I suspect the trans is done.

Thank You for the speedy reply. I figured it wouldn't be something easy. I guess now its either fix it or sell it. so I got some thinking to do. This thing was also rewired from the previous owner which I didn't find out until after purchasing that was a hack and slash job covered up with wire lume. So I know a rewire won't be cheap either, I'm not sure its worth the trouble. Anyway thank you so much. Take care.

At this point it might be a good idea to just cut your loses and sell it for parts.Unsure
But it's all up to you.
