1989 ford mustang 2.3L with A4LD trans

1989 ford mustang 2.3L with A4LD trans Sign In

 I have a 89 Mustang with a 2.3L with the A4LD I was doing 40mph and lost power. the engine runs perfect in park or neutral but in drive its top speed is 25mph and it takes afew to get there. Is this a transmission issue? Even on jack stands and in drive the engine is perfect. I have changed the fuel filter and fuel pump, the air filter, plugs and wires, cap and button, ignition module, coil, and changed the torque converter the issue got better after changing the torque converter but it still isnt right, before I pulled the transmission the car would barely drive up my car ramps. any ideas?

What is the engine rpm at 25 mph? Do you feel the transmission shifting as you accelerate? Did you make sure that you don't have hanging brakes?

not real sure what the rpms were while driving but they were low the engine seems to like bog while accelerating shes shifts ok when she can get there, but on jack stands and in drive the engine is free the rpm will tach out, thanks for your quick response Smile

It's difficult to determine from here if you have a transmission that is stuck in a high gear when your taking off or you have a drive-ability problem with the engine when it has a load on it. If you can feel the transmission shifting as your accelerating it may not be a transmission issue unless it is taking off in second. Even then you should be able to go faster than 25 mph if that were the case.

The only two other things that would be left are hanging front brakes or a performance problem with the engine.

Does the engine surge or misfire when your accelerating or when it can't get past 25 mph?

no the engine flat out seems fine it takes a while to get to 25mph and its not starting in second it does the same thing when shifting it manually im sure the brakes aint hanging up because i was driving like 5 mins at a constent 40mph without touching the brakes when it happened also i cant even torque brake the engine just boggs down and i go no where it doesnt even try to budge.

Somethings you could start with checking are low fuel pressure/volume, excessive exhaust back pressure, engine out of time, and codes being stored in the ECA.

Fuel pressure should be around 30-40 psi.

To check mechanical timing, you have to remove the timing cover and make sure that your marks are lined up. You can also inspect the belt in there to see if it is in need of changing or if it has become sloppy.

Exhaust back pressure can be excessive from an restriction in the exhaust. You can unbolt the down pipe from the manifold to see if the engine runs better and your performance comes back or you can install a back pressure gauge into the O2 sensor bung. Rule of thumb is you shouldn't see more than 3 psi at 2000.

To check for codes you'll have to get hold of an EEC IV code reader.

I already checked timing the belt is tight and solid aiready ran the codes from the eec using the obd1 codereader and it came back clean, the fuel pump and filter is new and the fuel pressure regulator isnt very old and i already cut off the exhaust and it is still the same I even looked though the cat and it was empty to begin with.

I am not positive but some of those came with a vane air flow meter that goes between the air cleaner housing and the ducting for the throttle body. It measures the amount of air going into the engine.

i have the efi fuel injection and not a throttle boby so im not sure

You may have ported injection but you still have a throttle body for air intake.

Im still not understanding my engine seems great unless it on the weight of the car idling in gear is fine just accelerating

ok guys it turns out that it was just a bad distuibutor geez if only i checked that first i could of saved 2 months of headache and heartache and alot of money because my distuibutor was still under the warranty bad i feel like a jack a@@ lol. thank you all for your help!!! Wink
