I have a 1989 Buick Park Avenue. The engine is excellent and it's been a great car. However, for a loooooooong while now, the car jerks when it's put into reverse. My new mechanic was saying that he's concerned about it. He's got a car just like it that he's rebuilding and he put another used tranny in it from a junker that only had 70,000 miles on it. He says the junkyard has another one with only 80,000 miles on it. He can get the tranny for $98 and put it in for $235 labor. I feel that this is quite reasonable. BUt how long could the car possibly go on like it is? It also needs a paint job pretty badly along with new seal around the doors. The car has always seemed to sit too low, even before we had new struts put on it. I don't know why. The car is going to get new brakes next week and the idle tensioner needs replacement as well. A few months ago we had a new harmonic balancer installed.
Anyway, it is a hard decision as to how much money to put into the car (it is our only one!) as maybe we should try to buy another good used car? We had a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis before this car and loved it.
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated by this ignorant gal! me and mom haven't the money to take a lot of chances, so I always research a car before we buy it.
Thanks!

Brace yourself! This could happen with the Buick from the engine cradle and mounts being broken, rusted etc., or just motor trans mounts. If you just look underside or open hood and watch the engine movement when shifting you may see the problem. Don't be in harms way while looking at things with engine running and shifting it!!!!

I'll be sure to mention this to him when I take the car in for brakes on Tuesday! The motor mounts have been replaced before actually! This mechanic did have me change gears a number of times while he watched the engine...geez I hope it isn't the tranny!
Thanks!
