1988 Ford Ranger Transmission ID Taq Question!

I have a 1988 Ford Ranger two wheel drive with a 2.9L automatic. Also it is an Extended Cab setup. I have been looking for a transmission for it due I can afford to rebuild the original transmission. I have been looking at local salvage yards for one. I have gotten a Interchange report for my truck and I was asked about the ID Tag and I didn't know what they were asking about until they explained it to me. Well the interchange report has a different ID tag then is what on my Transmission. My transmission ID tag is P-86GT-7006-AAP. Could the 86GT mean that it came out of an 86 Ranger instead of an 88 Ranger. The interchange report says the ID tag should start out as 88 or 89GT. If yall need more let me know. Thanks.
