1988 Ford Crown Victoria Cop - will not reverse Sign In

First, here is the pertinent information:

1988
Ford
Crown Victoria
V8 (? I know that it is an early 90's, cop grade, mustang engine)
55,300 miles

I bought this car recently knowing that the transmission slips between 1st and 2nd gear. That problem is manageable and she drives fine so long as you're gentle. I went to have the car inspected yesterday (per state emissions regulations) and he was NOT gentle. The noises that my poor car was making were awful! It sounded like trying to drive 45 mph in 1st gear (which is probably exactly what it was). I left with her running as she normally does but found out when I stopped for gas soon after that she will no longer reverse. park still functions normally, as does drive, but in reverse she doesnt move at all. and in neutral, if you take your foot off the brake, she shoots forward. I got home and checked the transmission fluid levels, which were a little high. I'm going to change the fluid tonight and replace the gasket and whatnot. Will that have any effect? What should I do? How can I fix this?

Also, the gears where you can see them in the dash are all off to the left (reverse is a blank space, N is reverse, D is overdrive etc.) Is this a seperate problem or rooted at the same cause? How do i fix this?

Don't even waste your money changing the fluid. It may not even drive away after that. The transmission is cooked and every time your try to drive it more, you do more damage then you already have. The transmission is wasted and it's only downhill from here.

I would at least get an opinion and estimate from a trans shop first and then you can see what your options are.
