1984 Chevy Suburban Truck shakes real bad and transmission pops Sign In

When i take off driving my truck it shifts from 1gear to 2gear fine but when it shifts from 3 to 4 my truck starts shakeing real bad. If I even bearly touch the gas the transmisson starts to pop. The only way for it to not start poping is to slam on the gas so it shifts down to a lower gear. I have a nice truck and I wish I could get this fixed. All in all, if have any info to whats wrong with it and the price to get it fixed it would be very appricated.

power; Nice truck. From the symptoms, are you certain that it isn't just misfiring under load? At higher engine rpms, you may not notice it, but under load and lower engine rpms....

yah im ceartin b/c when i first got the truck it had a tourque coverter button. After about 7 months tourque locked up so i took that button off, un locked the conveter thinking that solved my problems. well after this my idol would not go off some reason causing my truck to shift all wierd. after i fixed this i had to make the transmisson shift properly. Well 2 good weeks go thinking that i fixed it. Then the issues i have now came along. But if it wasnt for the history of it I would consider it misfiring.

powerlite; A torque converter button? Not sure what that would be? Newer vehicles, with four or five speed automatics have a button that you can push to keep the transmission from shifting into overdrive, but didn't know that an '84 would have that option. Which transmission do you have? TB350, TB400, TB700R4?

I have a 4 speed transmisson and the guy i bought the truck from rebuilt the transmisson for towing his dragster around. So he had it where the trans would not shift into 4th gear untill about 65mph. So when he was driving the truck and not haveing to pull anything he had this button on the truck so when on highways at 55mph speed limit he could push the button to make the truck shift up to 4th gear to get better gas mileage. but if this button was left on it would lock you tourqe converter up.

power; Yes, that's what the lockup torque converter does. It is intended to give you better fuel efficiency. I'm wondering if that is what you are feeling? The torque converter locking and unlocking? On most GMs, you can disable it by unplugging the solenoid at the transmission and driving it to see if the problem goes away. Of course, your engine rpm will increase and the fuel economy (that's an oxymoronSmile) will decrease. You may want to try this. That would eliminate the misfire theory.

i did that about 4 months ago and my choke would stay on. so i pluged back the solenoid and set the gears back to where they where supposed to be which is going in to 4th gear at 45mph. My truck was doing just fine for about 4 weeks then i started to notice in 4th gear it would not shift down when supposed to. For example i was driving up a slight hill down the road from where i live and it would try to stay in 4th gear going up the hill untill the truck started to shake real hard and then the trans had a loud poping sound causing my truck to almost die i took my foot off the gas and and rolled over the hill then stated driving again. but now its stating to do this when im on a flat road. the only way to get it not to shake and pop is to floor it for a couple seconds causing it to go in a lower gear.

power; Other than the choke issue, did the rest of the problems go away with the solenoid disconnected? This is taxing my memory, but isn't there a cable that runs from the throttle linkage down to the trans? I'm not a trans. guy, but if so, this cable should have an adjustment at the carburetor end?

Loren, just a hunch here, but could a piece of substrate in the converter have broken off and while driving the piece restricts the exhaust, hit a bump and the piece jostles out and power is restored. Have seen this on many older GM converters.

power; I'd have to check the wiring diagram, but I'm certain that the choke and TCC are two different circuits. Or, at least, should be. From the symptoms and your replies, it sounds like you have a TCC problem. Any transmission shop can replace the solenoid...usually around 200-300 bucks. As far as the choke, I'd trace the power back to see where it is getting it's voltage source. Someone may have tapped into an incorrect circuit?
