06 Chev Avalanche Torque lock-up not working Sign In

I have a torque converter / transmission question.
I don’t believe my torque converter lock-up is working. I have no error messages on the dash but my RPM’s are around 2100 @ 60mph, my van is around 1600 @ 60mph. Tried accelerating slightly on the hwy but no change, I also tried breaking slightly and no change in rpm’s.
Any idea’s.?

Brake lights work fine, is the torque converter release that is connected to the brake switch separate from the brake lights.?
The previous owner also had some kind of wire coming off the top of the transmission going to a relay under the hood beside the fuse box. It was all disconnected except for the wire that leads to the transmission, when I apply 12v+ to it, it turns on my battery light on my gauge cluster.? Any ideas what this could be for.?

Hello,
Transmission is called a 4L60E, Even though there is no error message you should have it scanned to see if you have code P1870, this code may or may not turn your engine light on. On these later model cars the lock-up clutch is pulsed on by a duty cycle solenoid, its not on off anymore. If you can get acess to a scanner you can see the actual tcc slip. Do you have acess to a scanner? a good scanner? Yes, when you release the gas or step on the brake it should come out of lock-up, when you press back on the gas it will go back in. Gary(are you by chance in new york?)i have a trans shop on long island.

Thanks for your help Gary.
I only have a cheap scanner at the moment but think I should buy something better, this one shows no error codes but I only bought it for $60….
I also appreciate the offer, but I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Any idea if the following scanners could show me that code.?

  • MaxiTPMS® TS401 TPMS

  • INNOVA 3130

  • INNOVA 3120

Or which is the better scanner to get.?

The maxi tpms, i think is for tire pressure system, the innova i never heard of. Do transmission shops in your area have a free diagnostic check?
Question, after a long ride on a highway and you get off the exit, driving locally does the trans seem like it shifting harder than normal. Gary

Re: 06 Chev Avalanche Torque lock-up not working Sign In

Went to the lake on the weekend hwy speeds around 65mph at 2100rpm.
Seems to shift normal in the city and hwy, no hard shifting.
I’m going to phone around today and see if I can get it scanned.
You mentioned that the clutch lock up is a pulse, could that be what they connected to the relay.? Is it a 12v pulse.? Why would they have disconnected it, is there any reason for doing it manually.?
Thanks for your help Gary

Re: 06 Chev Avalanche Torque lock-up not working Sign In

Hello,
Theres no relay, the computer uses the inputs(vss, tps, engine temp) to apply the converter, its pulsed on and off, these later transmissions the converter is designed to slip so the driver wont feel the apply, i guess its for a smother ride, if you can get acess to a scanner, look at live data and you will be able to see tcc slip to know if theres a problem, when fully applied you would want to see 30rpm or less of converter slip. When the converter gets applied, thats called lock-up- the converter locks to engine rotoation so theres not that much heat generated when fully applied. Gary

Is that 30 rpm max slip speed a general rule of thumb for GM all lock up converter clutches? Good info to know.

Re: 06 Chev Avalanche Torque lock-up not working Sign In

Update...
Had it checked at a local transmission shop (no charge) thanks for the suggestion Gary. I feel stupid, the toque convert lock is definitely working, not sure why I couldn't feel it prior to having it checked, but since then I can definitely feel it slide in and out.
I also ran into a friend with an 04 Avalanche and we compared notes, his mileage is almost exactly the same and rpms are the same. He runs at about 2100rpm @ about 110kph.
In short, thanks for all your help
