04 Sorrento 4WD malfunction

I have a 2004 Kia Sorrento 4X4 V6. After the first snow storm and the first time i used the 4WD this year a few days go by then the check engine light, 4WD low light come on and it will not go into overdrive all while it is in 2WD high. This model has a selector switch for 2H 4H and 4L. I brought it to the transmission shop in which they came up with the need for the $500 TCM. It was replaced and did absolutely nothing for the problem. So the trans shop brought it to the local Kia dealership in which they said my car needed a new transfer case? The trans shop looked into it and they insist it is not the transfer case so they replace the selector switch and that did nothing as well. The mechanic cannot come up with anything and told me that if i disconnect a certain computer module in the kick panel the lights would stay on but it will shift into overdrive but I'm not a fan of disconnecting computers in my car. The other problem with this is my car is due for an emissions test next month and it cannot be tested with a check engine light on. I have no idea what to do next and after paying $350 just to get my car back with no change in the problem i'm a little nervous about having another shop look at it without any kind of direction to go. What was the result of the Check Engine Light code reading if you have it? If not get it read,

P0700 Which i know is just the generic code for trans problem

Post that code in the section for "Trouble Codes" as I don't have software for all codes. "Generic Trans Problem" doesn't cut it,

(DTC) CODE # P0700....Transmission Control System (MIL Request) Translation: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Malfunction or Failure. P0700 Information Code The Transaxle Control Module (TCM) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transaxle control. If any malfunction is detected, the TCM informs the PCM by sending a signal (P0700 code). P0700 means that a code has been set in the TCM. This code is for information ONLY. If this code is present, check for transaxle codes.
So basically, the P0700 code is telling you to check the TCM for a
transaxle DTC. The TCM can not turn on the check engine light so it has
the PCM do it.

I'm sure they would've had to of pulled the codes out of the TCM. They didn't document what they were for you?
If you are the original owner of this vehicle it should still be under the 10/100 powertrain warranty.

They weren't able to pull codes from the TCM so thats why they opted to install a new one which unfortunately did nothing. I think that this problem is buried deep in the electronics and is going to come down to finding the one of a handful of people who have been able to solve the problem before. They also checked the wiring harness throughout the vehicle and also found no problems. And it has under 100k but i'm not the original owner. Thank you though

Yes it sounds like they couldn't communicate with the TCM and figured it was bad. There are at least 10 different modules on that vehicle so it's possible this is a network issue. I'm just curious how many other modules they couldn't communicate with.
Did they say if there was any U codes? This would be an indication of a network problem.
Just a long shot before you go to another shop....Have you had any type of aftermarket equipment installed lately? Stereo, GPs, anything? I've seen aftermarket equipment installed that gets tapped into a CAN line that reeks havoc with a network. If so, disable that equipment, clear out the system and see if that will make a difference.......
If not, then you are correct in needing to find the correct shop to find & fix this problem.
Let us know how you make out.....
It's too bad on the warranty...... That would've made this so much easier for you.....

Yeah, no aftermarket parts in it whatsoever. I do not recall the guys at the shop referring any U codes, I'll have to call them back on Monday to check into that. The other thing that upsets me but is somewhat understandable is because the Kia dealer diagnosed it with a need for a new transfer car (which would cost me $3800 for them to install) they cannot tell me that if it doesn't fix the problem they would or wouldn't charge me anyways. Which poses a big problem because I don't have $ like that to just throw into a car with my fingers crossed and hope it turns out my way. Its just very upsetting because besides a few wheel bearings and normal maintenance this thing has been a great little SUV. Again i greatly appreciate any kind of direction to take from everyone within this forum.
