04 Hyundai Tiburon will not go into any gears Sign In

I hope that I have posted this in the right section.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT. During Christmas, the clutch went out on the car. Short and long of it is that the clutch assemly and the flywheel had to be replaced. I had to replace the flywheel due to the fact that it was a dual mass fly wheel and the interior bearing was shot. Replaced with a standard flywheel replacement.

Problem: when attempting to initially remove clutch, directions said to remove the transaxle. I took that to mean disconnect the transaxle assembly case from the clutch case. ( I know I am not using all the right words here. I am trying to learn, one mistake at a time.) When I did this, it exposed the gears. I only pulled it about 1 - 2 inches apart before I realized that something was wrong. (Mainly that there is no way to get it out that way. (Not without removing the undercarriage) I push it back together, and finish replacing the clutch.

After getting everything back together, I get in the car and try to run through the gears. The car will only go into 2, 4, 5, and 6th gear. I pulled the transaxle back apart (about 1 inch) to see I dropped anything in there on accident. No luck. everything looks fine including the transaxle oil that I had in there. Put it back together again. Now it will not go into any gear. Any ideas?

Current gear pattern on shifter.

You have made a very serious mistake. Something internally has come apart and now the transmission is going to have to be removed and a transmission shop is going to have to take it apart and find what came apart. Your attempt to save money has about doubled what it would have cost to let the people that know what they are doing fix it in the first place.
Do not try to take that apart yourself or things are going to get much worse for you.

Thanks for the update Hammer. I apperciate your help.

Just an FYI, I was not just trying to save money. I was trying to learn. I do not have the time to go to school to learn this stuff, so I bought this car 2 years ago with over 150000 miles on it. (gave $1,000 dollars for it) I am a software engineer by trade, but I wanted a hobby and it has been fun to tinker on. I guess I will just pull any good parts off and sell them, and sell the rest for scrap metal. Not worth it to have someone else fix.

Is there a good book or something that I could read on how to rebuild transmissions? (I am very bored.)

Thanks
David

That is a highly skilled area to be working on. You probably should start will a less complicated part of the car. A basic rule here is if you don't know how to remove a transmission, you definitely shouldn't open one.

Thanks Hammer. Taking it to the scrap yard then. After I take it completely apart just to see what it looks like. Smile Granted, now I will probably not try it on my actual car.

And this means that I can return the new flywheel, clutch kit, abs cables, struts and brakes.

82edwards: W. H. Crouse with tons of help wrote the books when I went to trade schools now ancient history but still sells the books and should be available as "e-books" now.

Suggestion: Learn principles of operation FIRST then dig out specific info as needed for specific vehicles. One of many sites to chase down getting this is............

If into just transmission things you will find it's become a bit of a specialty of it's own. Too many different things for different cars to put in one book.

I think you'll find this a very expensive "hobby" as you mentioned - if only to have just the tools and space to do work,

T
