03 neon transmission issue

03 neon transmission issue

I have a 2003 Dodge Neon with 65k miles, and i purchased it used about six months ago. No problems until today. I was driving, and than came to a stop, and when it was time to go the transmission did not engage. I eventually got it to go for about two minutes in second gear until i could move to the side of the road. Is it possible that this could be less severe than replacing the transmission all together. What are the other possibilities that this happed, and what should I know when I go to the mechanic.

Check fluid level first. If it is low you want to find out why,
