Hello...My husband and I just bought an 03 Chrysler T & C EX van 3.8L 90XXX miles. During the test drive everything seemed fine, but now that the vehicle is home I have begun to notice that the engine shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd gear occasionally. We previously had an 02 Chry T & C LXI that did this same thing, but it had over 160XXX miles so I figured it was just the transmission giving up on us. I have had the new van (the 03) back to the dealership where we purchased it for repairs, but they can't find anything wrong. I would like to have any suggestions as to what things to look at, test, check etc.... so that I can go back to the dealership with more information and hopefully get the vehicle repaired under our warranty.

Here is what I have noticed so far:
- The engine has a hard shift from 1st into 2nd gear.
- This doesn't occur every time the engine shifts and is very unpredictable (hence why the mechanic couldn't find a problem)
- The hard shift seems to mostly occur after I have had to hit the brakes hard; like when someone pulls right in front of me; and then I have to accelerate quickly. It seems like if the engine doesn't shift down slowly like when you are coming to a smooth and planned stop then when I step on the gas to speed up it's like the engine doesn't know how and there is a lag-time of a 1/2 to 1 second or so between 1st and 2nd when the hard shift occurs.

On our old van, we had the same issue and we had to replace the alternator and battery b/c the alternator couldn't hold a charge and therefore torched our battery. The mechanic we had said that he suspected there may be an electrical problem with the transmission, but he wasn't able to find it. I don't know if the battery or alternator has been replaced on the new van.

Does anyone have any suggestions, hints etc....?

Thanks!

This probably can be scanned for codes for trans for help. If intermittent may or may not show anything. Will dealer change the trans fluid under any kind of warranty?

If you do that and this is just plain wearing it could make it better or worse to do that if not routinely done in its life,
