02 Trans Am, Moves while in park

02 Trans Am, Moves while in park Sign In

I have a 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 automatic V8 5.7L with about 67k miles. The other day while I was driving down the road, my brother pulled the park brake/e-brake and my car started making noises and wouldn't go so I put it in neutral and turned it off then on and it started working, but now while the car is in park the car still moves as if it were in neutral. Ideas?

Does the linkage itself feel normal? Can you watch it move at trans with a helper to see it?

I am not sure exactly what you mean, but the gears seem to slip a little sometimes, not sure if that has anything to do with it, and when I put it in park anyone could just push it and move it, so I have to use the e-brake to keep it from rolling.

I can't really see the connection to the parking brake and the trans not locking the car when in park. If you accidentally put the trans into park "P" while driving right along it would give a pretty wild ratcheting sound but is NOT a way to stop the car of course.

There should be some sort of spring loaded 'pawl' I think the term is that will hold a car level but was never intended to replace a parking brake. Most cars forced against just a parking pawl will ratchet along as that pawl jumps from one notch to the next.

It may have just plain broken and it's inside trans! I was just hoping that maybe the linkage just wasn't fully extending to the "P" position but if it behaves as it should in all other positions then it probably isn't that and the thing broke!



There's a generic pic of the basic idea. The thing will be spring loaded to be off or away from the receiving ring for it.

They lock pretty hard when stationery but there's just enough taper to them to slip if put into position with the car moving.

If linkage is all proper then I'll say this needs a trans specialist with the history to make the final call on the fix as I think it broke and just how may not be known until in there,
