weird smell from AC

Last night I noticed a weird smell coming from my air conditioning.
It's not like a gross mildew smell and it doesn't smell like antifreeze.
I drive a 2007 Ford Focus and it has 50,000 miles on it. I live in Phoenix, AZ and am always using the air conditioning.
The smell reminds me of a chemically rainy smell, kind of like how it would smell after it rains outside but with a chemical smell mixed in. It is irritating to my nose, so hard to drive with the AC on. It gets worse the longer the car runs, but I do not notice any weird smell if the air conditioning is not on. It seems the warmer the car gets the worse the smell gets.
I had my mechanic brother look at it last night and he told me it could be the cabin filter but he looked just as baffled by the smell as I did.
Does anyone have any insight as to what this could be and if it's dangerous for the car for me to continue driving it? I have not driven it yet today because of the smell, I am afraid to damage it and cause a more costly repair.
