2001 Chevy malibu 100,000mi approx. heat is not working also temp gauge is going up and down. Thermostat? Thanks

That post is stuck up top in this section and a common reason for what is happening to your car. It's likely that coolant level is low and may not show at the recovery bottle but probably is unseen low at radiator and in engine and can't flow properly for heat or maintain proper even temps as it should.

The issue up front is probably low coolant but the source issue is why is it low to begin with? That is VERY important to find out where it went - leak or whatever.

If not found low and I would suspect a leak then hit back and we can figure it out from there,
