I have a 2005 Ford F-150 4.6L with 40K mileage. I drained the coolant from the radiator and the block. Ever since then I have no pressure from the radiator cap (which is on the recovery tank) when hot, upper hose is very hot, but my lower radiator hose is cool, maybe just slighty warm. The air coming from my heater inside cab is really hot, and the temp gauge is right in the middle. I took off a heater hose from a manifold fitting to check for air pocket(when hot), but I saw just anti-freeze coming out. One other thing, I drained 3 gallons of coolant, and replaced 3 gallons of coolant. My owners manual says it takes 5 gallons......Steve

scalbanese; The entire cooling system, including the engine block holds 19.8 qts., which in my opinion, is huge. I have to admit, I was surprised to see that. It is perfectly normal for the lower radiator hose to be much cooler than the upper. The cool coolant from the radiator goes into the engine through the lower hose. The hot water from the engine comes out the top hose, into the radiator, to be cooled by air flow through the radiator. However, after a while of driving, they will 'somewhat' equalize under normal driving conditions. But, in cold weather, maybe not. If you had an air pocket, I doubt that you'd have heat from the heater core. You can have the radiator cap tested to make sure it is holding correct pressures, but doesn't sound, to me, that you have much to worry about. Glad to hear that you are keeping up with maintenance. Thanks Loren, I just changed my thermostat, and nothing really changed. I drove for about 10 miles, got it up to temp for 5 minutes, turn it off, and no pressure after removing cap...new cap by the way also...Maybe it will be fine, but I need to drive it for a longer period of time I think...Thanks again Steve So.
