how to disable air conditioning Sign In

hi
car;nissan altima 1993, 2.4 l, 208000km
some time ago at the air care inspection, i saw the guy conducting the inspection, turning on all the electrical
things in my car, at max, including both air conditioning and the rear window heater. I asked him why and the guy told me that it is possible to drive the car that way (???); now i'm gona make him a surprise and take off the fuses for rear window heater and air conditioning; now, should i take out the belt from the compressor to?

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

"All air conditioner compressors use an electro-magnetic clutch. This means that when power is fed to the clutch, the compressor is able to be driven by the engine. When power is cut off, the compressor drive wheel just spins freely. This compressor clutch power feed is the single wire that you can see going to the front of the compressor. To disable the compressor, all that we need to do is to put a relay (an electromagnetic switch) in this circuit, so that when the Voltage Switch trips, the power feed to the compressor clutch is turned off."

i'v got this from http://autospeed.com/..._110710/article.html
where they wrote about a device to control the air conditioning load and save fuel

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

Ditto! WHY?

If you don't want the A/C to engage just unplug it and safely tie away the plug. A/C can come on with defrost request if enabled. Fuel savings?? Marginal but disputed. Easy enough not to use it! Rear defrost - your choice anyway? If you don't want it on don't put it on - it has nothing to do with A/C,

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

well why did the guy turn them all on at once? you never drive with the rear defroster on and air conditioning on; or headlamps on (night) and air conditioning on etc...
i think he hoped to push it a little more to fail the test;
overloading the electrical system may result in a weak sparkle, and others disfunctionalities so the car fails the air care;
i'm positive he knew what he was doing;

i checked the test procedures and nothing is mentioned about the
other electrical elements beside the emisions related sensors;
i was right, the guy was doing "volunteer work"

If he is required to take his readings under load, then that is what he is required to do.

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

Just a note: The car was made to run all assessrories at once and if it can't that's a problem with charging, alternator or some other issue not specifically A/C. A/C draws current for a clutch and a blower - othersiwise not much of an electrical load. High load items are headlights, RWD (electric) and momentary use of PW, PDL, P seats etc.,

That is just some article someone wrote and says nothing about required test conditions. The whole idea is just nonsense. You can be failed just as easily for tampering so if I were you, I'd forget all your foolish ideas.

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

I don't even need to read that to know it's mostly junk. Take extra weight out of a car and keep tires properly inflated is most of it. The rest is drive right for max MPGs. I get 26 with an old Town Car no problem!

You pay to start and stop weight. Once staying steady the weight doesn't count so much. Alternator runs all kinds of things and takes real power to run them which equates to fuel used. Lighting isn't efficient yet in cars. The few seconds for a power seat or window doesn't add up to diddle. Using a cigarette lighter is a ton on juice if used to really let it get hot. Dumb - if you are a smoker use a hand held lighter. I smoke and never have used a car's lighter! Why?

RWD is close to a dead short of electrical using ton's of energy. Not seeing isn't so special either.

If you really want better MPGs get a car that does so anyway,

Yeah, I read that, somewhere. Especially the weak sparkle!

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

Tom,
He's not trying to get MPGs. he's just trying to manipulate his emissions inspection. Most foolish idea I ever heard.

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

OK: Ditto - Foolish. MA has as strict of emissions as anywhere on earth! Same with Calif I believe. You can fail if your washer fluid is low and won't spray - that bad! They don't force you to use accessories that are not state mandated. Emissions is separated from the long list of items that must work - wipers, lights etc. and the items that be mechanically correct - brakes, tire condition and so on.

I'm not really thrilled with the whole thing as the person testing may not know how to run a specific car and they take it from you. They take a test to be able to do tests but are not necessarily mechanics!

You can fail at emissions within limits and have a grace period. Failure of any safety item means the car can't be used on public roads from right then!

The vehicle should be right and not be over limits no matter what they might put on. 96 and up the car's OBDII tells the machine how it's been emissions wise and there are no further checks - the car knows!

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

manipulating the test? a little bit too much
the link i provided is the official website of the aircar inspection facility
i repeat, there is nothing written about electrical systems on durring the test ; the fact that the guy performing the test last time turned them on, without meaning, made me concerned about the whole thing
i think the expected results are made for a bare engine, without any extraload;
If i can "drive the car that way" way not put a load such as carring 5 passengers, a full trunk and towing extra 1000 lb? it is possible to drive that way too; whay not test it for that circumstance?

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

With the loads as you described a car with no issues would still pass?? They no doubt would take a trailer off but cars are meant to run clean under the assorted conditions. If you don't trust this place go somewhere else,

Those people are trained on how to test and under what conditions so just leave them alone and let them do their job..

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

Uh guys........ This is like trying to teach pigs to sing...... You're just wasting your time & annoying the pig..

This is the EXACT reason I am a firm believer that people who don't understand cars shouldn't watch their cars being worked on. They have a little bit of knowledge & fill in the gaps with own assumptions (which are usually way off base) and once they are set in, they will never be changed..... at least not by another technican

ionmachiman, no offense but you don't know what you are seeing...... You are not alone, there are others like you. In my shop if I get a cust like you, I flat won't work on the car (i'm lucky enough to have a little pull to be able to do that) so you are going to get one of the younger less experienced tech which isn't the end of the world but in most shops you'll probably never get their best tech on your car.....

You said you found out the guy working on your car was just there doing "volunteer work"...... Hmmmmmmm there's a big shock........ Never would've guessed that one.....

Yeah, i think it's just a conspiracy on these testers parts. They are conspiring to fail every car in the country so they can have all the roads to themselves.

Re: how to disable air conditioning Sign In

great news!
somebody have complained because now they specifically ask you to turn off air conditioning and all the electrical stuff;
durring the test they don't turn it on anymore!
cool!
so, it won't be necessary to take out the fuses;
ty anyway
