Hi Pontiac Bonneville a/c compressor has a wheel/disk in front of the pulley that seems to engage ever 15 seconds run for 2 seconds and disengage and so on.Is this normal??? Sorry for my ignorance but I live in Spain and have no experience with such cars. The car is a 1995 3.0ltr with 50,000 miles. Thanks for any advice you could give

Does this happen with the A/C on? or when the heater defrost is on? It is normal for the clutch to cycle when the defrost is on. If the A/C is on and it cycles fast with warm air coming out of the ducts, low freon level or a pressure problem is usually the cause. Steve

Thanks for the speedy reply Steve, It is happening all of the time regardless if nthe a/c is switched on or off, and at all engine/ambient temperatures. Will take this weekend to have the gas checked. Could I cause any damage driving it with this problem? Again many thanks Rob

As long as the a/c compressor is not banging it should be ok to drive it for a little while. Steve

If you are concerned about the compressor you could disconnect the connecter at the clutch or the connecter at the low pressure cut off switch on the accumulator.

Thoughts on this: Steve, Sidom and robt, I can't find a 3.0 listed for this car if sold to the US. Also didn't think it was made for export market but have been surprised before and seen versions made for export - rare. Especially a Pontiac. There is a set up where this could use the "thermistor" for A/C (see Cadillacs) way for cycling a compressor and a VR (variable rate) which will run until dramatically low on refrigerant. Not just the low pressure switch cutting out. Not sure what this has for what so agree that until locally checked out it should be unplugged, T
