So now im wondering if i just buy a salvaged ac compressor and switch compressors..did not empty refreg before removing clutch.compressor still attached.Do you have any suggestions? So now im researching this procedure..I have a book on this 89 olds and it suggest I use a big screw driver wedge in the teeth of the back ring gear..well it also states that there is 219 ftlbs of torque on the center bolt of the vibration damper or harmonic balancer.my question is will the teeth on that ring gear hold up to that much torque? It's really just a big pulley and they do use rubber which can separate. Should only be the crankshaft bolt and a puller needed for most all. Tricks: You can lock the flywheel (ring gear) or see which way engine turns and put a strong socket and flex bar on the bolt if correct. Duh - if not don't try that and if you do position tools out of harm's way. Watch out - a starter motor is stronger than you would think! PS, on your comment about used parts.............. It's only cheaper if you only have to do it once.
