ac blowing hot air.

ac blowing hot air. Sign In

I have a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria with a little over 68,000 mi. The ac has been working great. This morning started up the car drove maybe 15 mi and then it started to blow heat. We were on our way home from New Hampshire to Western Ma. and boy was it hot.
Any ideas on what to check or due. PLEASE
jUST ME.Unsure

If exactly what I think the compressor is, this is common to have too large a clutch gap for it to engage. Look and see if compressor even turns. Engine off and cool you can check that air gap with a folded regular biz card which shouldn't fit in there and unfolded should fall out. Ave setting is .020 if you want to measure.

Common problem and the easiest one (if the one I'm thinking) to do yourself in a few minutes!

Make sure that's the problem first. As I said and if the compressor I think it has this should be a 4.6 engine and compressor lower left (passenger's side) on the belt system. The compressor's clutch gap on that type if that type get too wide for the electromagnetic clutch to engage it so it's plain like off.

Symptoms are measuring the wide gap being too wide and the car can cool properly now and then at first and quit just like that and may start up working again later. Wicked common to me - maybe something in the air here??

If it's just that then with just an 8mm or 5/16th socket the outer plate tiny bolt will come out. Hold pulley with a rag is usually enough. Plate will come right out and there's a tiny washer in there that if you remove one (may only be one) when re-installed the gap will be that much closer and work again for the next X # of miles. SAVE THAT LITTLE WASHER. When put back on and little bolt tight there should be NO rubbing or dragging or it's too close but it's never happened to me yet.

That's it! Just make sure that little nut is snug but don't break it or that's trouble. 5-10 minute job. Have done them at yard parties without getting dirty. Carry the little wrench with me all the time.

Note: This may not be the problem so be sure or get help but if it is know it's a while you wait job and should be priced accordingly if you just have it done.

If unsure keep asking. Wish I had a diagram of just what I'm talking about to show you. This doesn't involve messing with refrigerant at all and can be done from just leaning over from above,

I was just going to edit this into your post Tom but wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not.....

It's a Honda compressor but I believe it's what you are referring to

Perfect as usual Sidom! #9 shows the 8mm little bolt and that diagram shows more than one shim. Some I find only one??

Can't be sure yet exactly what's in this critter as I just don't know if all were the same or not?

That's as close as we're going to get IF and only IF this is in fact the problem as said,

I am a little confused. It says a Honda compressor. I have a 2002 ford crown vic. Do you mean that the picture is just like the one I have?

That diagram is the compressor I was referring to. Diagram doesn't state on the diagram so see if it looks like that.

In case I'm barking up the wrong tree go measure the clutch air gap. .020 is nice. By the time they get to .030 or more any MAY have issues no matter who made the compressor and clutch.

If no feeler gauge just take the ordinary biz card and fold it tightly. It should be near impossible or tight to get in the gap. Unfolded most would fall out. You need some air gap just not too much.

The other common problem I've had is the dang relay. Should be well marked as to which one underhood. They can have ATTITUDE to cause total hair loss. They can work one day and not the next or do tricks once and never again. I carry a spare - no joke! Must be the Massachusetts air or something but have had to use them on my own at least three times! Put the car in the garage and sucker decides to quit next time I use it. Many use same relay (part #) for fuel pump and A/C and I've seen TWO go out at once with no other problems with the car??

Is this the 4.6 motor? If unsure it should say so right on it or on a decal underhood,

yes it is a 4.6 when ac is turned on the cannister inside the engine nearest the firewall gets cold and sweats. Yet hot air comes inside the car.??????

Ahhh! Sorry - Whole different problem now! That canister is called an 'accumulator' to catch any excess of cooling not giving to the car. It couldn't be cool if compressor wasn't engaged.

Several possibilities now dammit. Could be control head thinks you are asking for warmer than requested, actuator on blend door, blend door itself, or if equipped with heater control to shut warm/hot water to heater off (just don't know each system) when A/C is requested is stuck open the heat would win over cooling.

If this has ATC (auto temp control) then sometimes I've seen papers or something put on dashboard or any blockage fools what it thinks cabin temperature is.

It's rare to me but I think now we are talking an actuator motor has stripped out and stuck on whatever temp it feels like.

This may and probably will require some hands on professional help to diagnose and do,
