First determine what is and isn't working. A/C is a whole system - not just a filler up and go thing. Is compressor working, fans to condenser on, does it have a static pressure enough to even start up? Static should be about in psi what the air temp is in Fahrenheit. If lower system has a massive leak and near no refrigerant and just filling it up will be a waste.

The kits, cans and things sold with just one hose are commonly called "Death Kits" and many shops will not touch a system that has been contaminated with those products short of throwing every bit of the whole system out to protect their own equipment from getting gunked up with the added junk put in most of those kits. Take them back and deal with only the pure refrigerant the vehicle was made for.

If you want to continue you need gauges (manifold set) thermometers, a multimeter and test light at a minumum. Pros and DIYer use dye to find leaks that is the most common reason for A/C to cool poorly or not at all. You must be aware that no moisture can be allowed to enter the system. Hooking up any hose that has air in it starts problems with just that tad of air in the hose.

You'd be shocked at just what it takes to charge a system and I'll post the link below. It can take thousands in equipment and many hours of training to just get going. Check it out....
