a/c compressor won't stay engaged Sign In

Hi there, another newbie asking silly questions but here goes anyway. Have a 2005 Pontiac Montana 6 cyclinder with 180K for mileage. A/C was weak( not cooling well), recharged system to low side pressure of 36 lb. When car was restarted the compressor would not stay engaged and no cool air coming out at all now. The equipment I have does not give me a high side pressure so I,m SOL there. If you have any ideas with the limited info I have given please let me know. I am thinking that a professional a/c shop may be in my future. Anyway thanks for your help. daveTongue

Your probably right that the ac shop is the future. Without knowing both high and low side pressures it is difficult to even guess what is going on.

Another problem is that the system holds a certain weight of refrigerant. Too much or too little can cause poor ac performance and/or system damage. Charging a system by pressure instead of weight is an extremely inaccurate way of making sure you have the correct weight of refrigerant in the system. The system has to be recovered, vacuum, and recharged with the proper weight. Then reading system pressures can give you idea what is going on if the problem is still there.

As Discretesignals just said this needs to be charged by weight to knowns of system capacity which I can or we can provide but like he just said this needs a shop that does this as it's difficult and equipment can get insanely expensive for the DIYer. Yes, some rent able but doubt you are there yet and no harm intended.

I don't want to lock another post up top but do read "CHARGING PROCEDURES" that's there now. OMG, that's just the tip of the iceberg in a fixed or working system and pages long!

1. Doing this wrong can not only hurt you but wreck mega bucks of components so beware or let the pros do it as there's too much at risk, not just an opinion but the truth.

1. (again) Too much or too little refrigerant won't cool properly. Way too much is damage you don't want.

This may need a repair or just proper charge and can't know that without more info,

Tom

I hate not being able to do things myself also, but if I don't have the equipment, skills, or training it's really hard to do something right the first time. When it comes to things like tiling the bathroom or installing a range hood, I'm gonna make a mistake. Unimpressed

Right with you DS. Several things I won't do on the home front. ONE - some things need legal work whether I could do it or not and signed off and new codes like your range hood that POed me as last one required X number on inches over stove to be a dual hood and microwave and would have been a nightmare. Eliminate cabinets or a no go!

Roofing - forget it. Had it done as I can't carry those bundles and chew gum anyway never mind walk around with them on a steep roof.

220 wiring. NOT. Both legal issues and a mistake could burn my home down - sometimes wish it would - not real funny.

Opposite: Car stuff I was trained 5 years worth and have no issues with. A/C as cars got newer are VERY sensitive to the correct amounts vs some old (I mean 60s+70s) where a whole pound off still worked fine, no more.

There are places to save money and places smarter to get the right help for sure,

Tom
