Terrible smell coming from ducts Sign In

I recently purchased an 02 Escort that had been sitting up for several months. Overall the car is in great shape and all works as it should so far. When I fired up the AC a terrible odor came from the ducts. It not only emits from the ducts when the AC is running but when any type of air is being forced through the ducts. I fear some type of animal had been trapped inside the system and has died and that is causing the problem. Before I begin tearing everything down to find the problem is there anywhere I should look first or any remedies I can try.

I would say the first place to check would be removing the blower motor. That's usually where the enter.

Thanks, sounds like a good place to start. Where is the blower motor on the 02 escort. Is it under the hood or dash

To add for Handy:

You may find evidence, droppings or who knows in there. They sell duct freshener but really no need IMO once you get whatever out as best you can. Just real Lysol should kill most of the odor both while in there and more thru where air enters up by wipers outside will help. You may not find anything or much but it should go away if you kill the bacteria as suggested,

One quick question. Was the bad odor there right off the bat as soon as you got it running or did it take a few days to appear?

The odor was there immediately. The car had not been started in a while

Handy - I think we are all trying now to determine what this odor is - animal or just pollen and perhaps small foliage like pine needles that can get in thru the screens of incoming air. A/C naturally will make condensate (water) as a by product and if anything is just left wet long enough if in certain environments could be the cause. That is supposed to drain out as I'm sure you've seen before to the ground. If it can't that's another issue. Does it drain perfectly dry right away - not likely.

Some will just self correct with use and or if left in hot sun if it was left out under a tree or something. If A/C is working properly now and draining they usually will clear out with some use and some spray down grids/screens out by wiper with system running should help right away.

Smoke takes longer. Some from whatever source requires ozonating the interior to help. Carpets that are wet are very difficult to fully dry out too if the case.

Just trying to hone in on the fastest fix for you,

T
