Wierd A/C problem
Im driving a `96 Dodge 3500 5.9 w/ 146,000 miles

When I am sitting at a idle....A/C blows warm
When I am driving in the neighborhood of 10 to 35 mph....it blows very cold
When I am driving 35+ (give or take) it blows warm again
now its blowing my mind...

Im no mechanic but,
compressor seems to be cycling okay, no drips under cab, but I usually dont go slow enough to keep it cold for very long, I put a couple cans of R134 in it...didnt seem to change anything......

any ideas???

Much thanks in Advance....Im in TX and its June....gotta get this dude bowing cold for me!!!!

Can only make a wild guess as there's no info here as to what and how much you added and what the pressures were before you did. Probably wildly overcharged it and hope you didn't bust anything.

One chart shows this only holds 32oz of pure 134a from a well held vacuum/empty so if the common 12oz cans you way over did it in all likelihood now making what might have been simple nasty expensive.

A or B or C high on the list: Leaked out already to quite low, overcharged and choking on refrigerant and in that you never see condensate it might be freezing up but that frequently will leave you a puddle when shut down and poor air flow.

Needed: What was the first problem and what pressures at what temps and RPMS. One more - if you used sealer you could be in deep sneakers,

Re: Strange A/C problem Sign In

Thansk for the info.

no idea what the pressures were its a farm truck...I live way way out in the middle of nowhere.
it was blowing hot and had a skweaky squirrel fan.....replaced the fan.
figured it was low on R134...added a can...no change at all
took it to a mech in town about a week later....he put tires on it, inspected it, and I asked him to look at it.
he did his thing...charged it if I remember right...and said he couldnt fix it and I should take it to some other guy even farther away. Havent done that. Its about a 2 hour drive.
Not sure if he checked pressures or not.....
I didnt use stop leak.

Whats my next move?

Sorry this all happened to you but you need pro help. You can't just get away shot gun shooting blindfolded at A/C or risk lots of extra problems you might not have had.

Unplug the compressor and hope. Tie the plug safely away. Then get some pro diagnostics at least. Oh 65-75% of poor cooling started with a leak - common. How to approach that is to fix the leak and know your pressures before you touch anything if it will run at all or make any cool for you. could have been something else altogether other than needing refrigerant??
